Visit to the Freelon Group and the library

As I enter the parking lot of The Freelon Group, the anticipation has already sunk in so deep that I can hardly wait. This will be my very first time going beyond the lobby of an architectural firm. Previous to my visit I believed that I did not desire to; nor would ever be qualified enough to gain employment with an architectural firm. Since then, I have changed my thoughts, my opinions and my heart based on the information that the firm’s interior designers and intern architect shared with the class. This trip revealed that interior designers practicing in an architectural firm undoubtedly play a vital role in all projects. One which is taken seriously and is integrated in all projects. I was ecstatic to hear the designers speak of how little I needed to be “artistic” [with drawing] when communicating ideas to clients. As we toured the office areas and pin up spaces, my observations of the presentation boards and such furthered my feelings of delight to know that it’s not all about “hand renderings or super imposed graphics”. The boards were clean and simple digital renderings with little process work. I LOVE IT! This firm is speaking my language. At some point in my education at UNCG I became very discouraged. I felt the program placed too much emphasis on hand methods as well as a strong focus on “artistic” values in communicating with clients. On the other hand it’s prepared me to skillfully and effectively sketch impromptu when the occasion arises. Therefore, the education I am receiving at UNCG is preparing me to compete for a number of positions within an architecture firm or an interior design firm, both residential and commercial. It’s also enhancing those skills of the students who are “artists” at heart. In some cases I believe that there is a place for those designers as well. For instance, tvsdesign’s seem to be a firm that would embrace someone who is an abstract thinker with an artistic flare. Their projects seem to be such that, one would have to visualize, then hand draw, then calculate, then formulate, and then digitally render. The Freelon Group’s projects seem to be structure, commercial, and code driven. Simple and sometimes mundane but is delivered and executed in the manner of tremendous admiration and appreciation. This happens to be the description that their very own designers verbalized regarding most of their projects; however, they did mention that the more exciting projects were the libraries. It’s apparent why they would think of it this way. The design process for the library was done with great thought many revisions, explained by Kevin Turner. He was assured that the design was functional and efficient when his wife and kids entered and for the first time and knew how to navigate with ease.

In comparison tvsdesign’s interior designer delivered a more personable presentation and made a great connection with our class through work samples that we could relate to. Both tvsdesign and The Freelon Group gave the class an insight on how the professional world of design operates on a day-to-day basis. They gave an account for the course load we are undertaking in our studio-based studies. Best of all they gave us the courage to go forward and pursue our niches we are currently setting forth because there are positions at every firm where your talents and skills can be an asset!

Assignment 2 in STUDIO:

There are 18 students who have been assigned the task of working with CNNC to develop schematic designs for the new office located at the Lofts on Lee. We are divided into 4 subgroups; I belong to the "immigrants" group along with Cassandra Bradsfield and Alyssa Hankus. We are responsible for collecting data from the tenants [refuges, clients, immigrants]of the 3 communities that will ultimately help us decide how the new facility can become more engaging to them and less administrative [like]. As I walked in Avalon’s community center Kara, an AmeriCorps volunteer was able to help resolve _____________ [Central African Republic} anti-virus issue with his laptop. He just seemed to be very excited about having this piece of machinery that was obviously outdated. What was also very obvious was his excitement about his life. He spoke little English and was eager to converse with me. He hasn’t had any interactions with the CNNC’s office but was proud to be in the USA; he actually arrived here through the efforts of a local church. He shared information about his job search as Kara helped with explanations of a few items.

Kara believes that the expansion of the new office could lend itself to becoming an offsite venue to a small group of girls she teaches. She is currently planning on teaching them to cook in her kitchen at her small apartment because it’s bigger than the small kitchen in the community center. FOOD for THOUGHT! She also feels that the outing will be refreshing to them; she describes it as “a change in scenery”.

Younger adults seem more interested in becoming educated, they seem very proud to be here. I meet three young men who were all in school [college] that wore their name badges as they went on about their day. It wasn’t because they forgot to remove them. It was because they felt a part of something that connected them to the USA…the place that allowed them to THINK and be FREE!

__________ doesn’t go to ESL however his sister does, she is a young adult and is seeking to advance her education. ____________ was very helpful and willing to share information because I was a little lost. He was not as intimidated by my presence as the older generations were. He was one of the three young men attending an area college.

This is the generation that could spoke broken English however; understood main ideas of the conversation. They will adapt very well in the US perhaps sacaficing some of their cultural traditions.

Family is as important to them as it is to us however; they seem to rely on each other even more because there are a number of other ethic groups amongst the population and they feel more of a bond within their own household than outside.

Due to the fact that the tenants of these communities are refugees they have trust issues. Many looked at me as an outsider and with uncertainties. They seem puzzled by my presence because they are accustomed to the AmeriCorps staff members and volunteers.

Maintaining their culture is a huge part of the older generations daily life and activities. They like to cook authentic foods and some even like using the fresh air to dry clothes vs. using the electric dryer. Becoming accustomed [Americanized] seems to be a slow process for the older generation. I met a woman ___________ who’s laundry became nearly unmanageable because the washer and drying system / process was as foreign to her as the new land she’s arrived upon. The shrubby at her front door is just too small to accommodate amount of laundry her family had accumulated. However, she still leaves behind the socks of her baby and a few other small garments dangling on the bushes; today’s weather was just irresistible. This is the generation who will probably never become fluent in our language nor desire to become fully. This is primarily because the men are workers and the women are homemakers. There isn’t too much need for them to make a complete conversion as there is for the men.

GlenHaven’s Visit

As Renee and myself walked in the room where the residents were busy painting ______________ turned around and said “TEACHER” with a colossal smile with open arms as she gestured for a routine huge. She was reaching for Renee but I wanted one too! ;o)

She is Montagnard. _____________ is roughly 50 years old. Her generation thrived in the community center’s activities. They appear to be very happy to participate in the kindergarten [like] crafts. They were very proud of their work and showed a tremendous amount of gratitude for the women whom volunteered.

Side bar:

One of the volunteer’s daughters is featured in the January’s edition of “Better Homes and Gardens”. She was very proud to share this information when she learned of the nature of my visit. She was also happy to point out every detail of her daughter’s beautiful home and their family photo.

There were other crafts that the refugees had made previous to my visit, like crocheted necklaces and other unique pieces of jewelry. These items are sold at local crafts festivals and help resupply the crafts and other small needs of the refugees.

The community centers house and volunteers facilitate:

· ESL – tutoring and citizenship classes

· Sewing classes

· Donation storage

· A nurse’s station

· A full kitchen for nutrition classes and Friday cookies

· Computer lab [computers supplied by UNCG]

· Backyard at GreenHaven has a playground with table and benches

· A reading room

· Educational and informational station

· Small office for volunteers

My observations are that it takes very little to make these settlers happy. They come bearing gracious spirits and a strong sense of pride for where they’re from and where they’ve arrived. With a little guidance this population is certain to be productive members of our society.

Cassandra W. Brunson CAD IN INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE

Parametric modeling is an interactive digital form of an object or a building. It is not random data however it is a collection of measurable data that is capable of corresponding to one another. This form of modeling allows changes and edits in one family / component to reflect in all families instantly with one simple click. Therefore, if the designer chooses to make any changes with the walls, doors, materials, or roof in plan view [2D]; these changes will automatically update simultaneously in all other views. [elevation, section] Parametric modeling allows objects to maintain relationships within and between objects. This method of building supports cohesiveness in all documentation of a project. The parametric engine in Revit guarantees, “a change anywhere is a change everywhere”.

I’ve been successful in visually communicating my designs ideas in SketchUp due to it’s amazing rendering Plugin [Podium SU]. This allowed me to share my ideations with my professors or clients in a creative manner. However, I have been limited in exchanging this information with any others in the construction process. SketchUp doesn’t seem to be designed for efficiency in floor plans, sections, and elevations. Although, they are possible to create in SketchUp, they are primarily useful when diagramming and not actual measurable tools for building. Instead, I’ve used AutoCAD for these purposes, and have also experienced great limitations with the exchange of information and modeling. AutoCAD has been a life safer for editing documents. Then on the other hand, it too has been detrimental at times because it’s not built to correspond with other families/components within the project. Therefore, if I changed the position of a door in plan view, I must remember to change it in all views, as well as how it is attached to other components.

I am pleased to be introduced to a software program that operates on a BIM approach. Revit will allow all the headaches and heartaches from the previous software to cease. Changes will occur throughout the entire model simultaneously with the click of a button…plan, elevation, sections, and schedules / lists. It will be easy to correspond with contractors and clients based on the capabilities of documentation that can be generated. The computer will basically do the hard work, like calculating, communicating and translate changes in data, unlike CAD. I’m looking forward to worker smarter and not so hard.

Computing in Architectural Design…..by Yehunda Kalay

provided a history of computing in architectural design dating back to Mesopotamia around 5000-2000 BC. There was as much of a need for precision in geometry while building that structure as there is now with the Apple store in New York City. Kalay discusses the evolution of computer-aided design in terms of “generations”.

The first generation CAD systems concentrated on [1] geometric modeling, geared toward supporting the needs of mechanical industries; and [2] buildings, geared towards supporting the needs of the construction industry. Therefore this generation of systems was often referred to as “building design systems”. While the second generation CAD systems became known as “drafting and modeling systems”. This was primarily due to the needs of the architectural community. Similar to the first generation, CAD systems required large and powerful computers to support the calculation-intensive computations needed to manipulate and display geometrical constructions. These systems also required expensive display hardware, specialized input devices, and graphic oriented input devices; thus, could only be afforded by large companies. As the personal computer became smaller and affordable due to the Apple II the demand for useful software became prevalent. In January 1984 Macintosh was introduced and they soon developed early CAD systems like MacDraft. While this was a giant stepping-stone the capabilities of these systems were limited and non-professional. Autodesk and other software companies began to introduce/write software that bridged the gap; and supported architectural design. With this progression architects gained the ability to draft and communicate designs with photo-realistic renderings. Kaylay says, Third generation CAD systems “seem very similar to the first-generation CAD system, which were centered on architectural objects and were intended to support the design, not merely the representation of buildings.” Meanwhile, the electronics industry developed software that could truly aide in the design in ways that no human can do so. This development left an impact on the architectural industry as well as many other disciplines. While there’s always room for improvement I believe we should approach with caution the demands we place on the computer [aid-ing] human designers.

With that notion, Kalay expresses the roles of computing in architectural design.

Computers are instruments with no intelligence of their own as humans we use them as design tools, means of communication, and as a design assistants.

Jimmy John's

a. Jimmy Johns is a restaurant where food preparation and dining takes place.

b. Most of the lighting within Jimmy John's was geared towards task lighting. Accent lighting was also seen along the ceiling, being focused onto walls. Hanging pendants over dining tables acted as both task lighting and ambient lighting.

c. In the kitchen and prep room, ceiling installed fluorescents provided an ample amount of lighting for tasks. Recessed can lighting can be seen directly above the countertop, illuminating the counter and service area. Track lighting helped cast light onto the surrounding walls, and pendant lights provided a nice diffuse glow over the dining tables.

d. Overall, Jimmy Johns was successful in using a variety of lamps to acquire the appropriate amount of light within the establishment. My only recommendation would possibly be to provide more light to wash over the wall, to further illuminate the space and accentuate the art work hanging on the walls.

Fabrics 3 & 4

A. The first fixture chosen was an LED lamp we had on hand. Originally labeled for under cabinet lighting, we chose to use this for our experiment in the same living room listed below. The lamp is manufactured by Shenzhen Hexinyu Tech. Co., Ltd and is labeled as HXY-120V1000A. It houses a total of 9 small LED lamps, in rows of three.

The second fixture chosen was from a ceiling fan, which uses four Sylvania incandescent bulbs -120V/25W. This ceiling fan is located in a living room with cream-colored walls, white trim, a dark red microfiber couch and wood floors and accent furniture. There are three windows that bring in natural light from South and Eastern directions, although the pictures were taken in the evening.

• record the change in color of the fabric samples by taking photographs and your subjective reactions to the appearance of colors in the different settings. Don’t use flash!

Fabric 1:
a wheat colored microfiber that can be used for covering furniture. Placing this fabric on different colored backgrounds really showed a variation in the lighting effects. First, we placed it on a wooden table directly under the ceiling fan. It took on a very warm, almost reddish tone – really picking up the reds from the table. Next, we placed the same fabric sample on a white glossy painted surface and the color appeared almost brown, hints of red but with light sage color with hints of gray.

Next, we held up the LED light next to the microfiber fabric on both surfaces. We definitely noticed how the light traveled across the fabric differently between the two light sources and surfaces.
This LED gave a accent light effect that is usually used to show importance and have something be noticed. The wrinkles in the fabric were definitely more noticeable and the fabric color, on the wooden surface, looked very greenish but washed out - almost unrecognizable from the other light source. On the white surface, the LED took on less of an accent effect and the color gradient along the fabric was less noticeable. The fabric took on a brown/canvas color and not as washed out as previously viewed.

Fabric 2:
cream-colored sheer lace-curtain panel with green, yellow, red and peach/pink colored flowers woven through it. Putting this fabric on the wooden surface, the color from the wood really made a difference in how the fabric took the light. It created a very warm, reddish color – picking up a lot of red from the wood table. The colors of the flowers appeared completely different in color and it was hard to really distinguish the various flower colors. There was absolutely no glare from the light at all onto the fabric.

When placing this lace panel onto the white surface with the LED light, we immediately noticed the glare from the light. Colors were more distinguishable in the fabric, however the light really seemed to be more intense in a certain spot and really fad off quickly across the edges. There was an overall greenish tone to the fabric with the LED lamp too.

• do you notice any aspect of Flynn’s subjective impressions?

Absolutely. The ceiling fan lamps (Sylvania incandescent 120v/25W), these are a warmer light, which would be deemed appropriate since Flynn states that, “a warm atmosphere suggests
friendliness or coziness..” this is exactly the type of atmosphere that one would generally want to create in their living room. The impression left on us from the LED lighting tones, gave us a slight uneasy feeling and was not calming.

• based upon your observations and reflections, provide recommendations for improving the lighting environment.
There is definitely a need for more various lighting fixtures in the living room studied. There is currently one other fixture in this room with a now standard fluorescent lamp giving off the equivalent of 60Watts, it leaves parts of the room darker than others. The overhead ceiling fan is usually not used for lighting because it gives off a bit of glare when trying to watch television or reading. Additional fluorescent lamp fixtures on opposite sides of the room would offer a more even, pleasing glow for gatherings or reading.
The LED fixture is not used by either group members for anything other than lighting for studio projects, however using them as under counter lighting may be successful if there were more than one lighting a counter. There is a port to attach another fixture to this one, which would create a total of 18 small LED lamps shining down on a counter, and that would be successful counter lighting provided that the counter was not an ultra shiny material or a polished granite which could create more glare than desired. Overhead lighting would also give a more accurate account of food colors when prepping meals.

Here's where CHIP took it's form!

"CHIP is a real-life application of green design in the modern world created by the Southern California Institute of Architecture and California Institute of Technology for the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2011. CHIP offers a solution to the challenges of home ownership and energy consumption. While appearing to be a house of the future, this "prototype to product" is ready to be injected into the Los Angeles landscape after it returns from Washington, D.C.

Design Philosophy

California's soaring land costs and urban sprawl are the motivating factors behind CHIP's design. CHIP is an affordable dwelling with a small footprint that can be used as infill or placed in zoning that accommodates shared lots. CHIP features a flexible central space with large apertures that can open for coastal life in Southern California and solar shades and insulation panels that can accommodate a cozy evening in the Sierras.

Assignment 1.0 we began to research and analyze the participating teams in the 2011 Solar Decathlon ; assignment 2.0 allowed us to apply our discoveries to a single family residential dwelling. Our class used various means to utilize solar energy along with techniques of achieving energy efficiency. Assignment 3.0 gives us an opportunity to further develop 1 teammate's design. Following a design sherette of about 20 students we've decided on an architectural detail that will be built from the house. We have examined the structure as well as enhanced and reconstructed certain features....all without compromising the integrity of the original design. our slogan is: Tectonic Architecture : Design in Motion.

I'm making my way to the lavatory! I enjoyed experimenting with the reflection in the mirror. Well, just started out as a simple rectangle that i added translucency to; then I applied 100% reflection using the podium materials editor.

Still need some final touches with Photoshop...for instance, green hair.

As a combined effort in the reconstruction of the Tectonic house we formed 3 groups [design, build, and model]. Initially, we collaborated and finalized the group's name and concept. I was a member of the Design team. Our responsibilities included finalizing the design elements and the materials of the house as well as the logo. We were also responsible for documentation [floor plans, sections, elevations, interior and exterior renderings, site plan, geographic location,] presentation set up [layout of materials, furniture selection and arrangement, refreshments, and communication] marketing, [media kit design layout and print, information card design layout and print, origami pamphlet trinket design and print], and an animation video [DVD give away displaying a walk-through of the house and a time lapse video of the canopy being built]. Light and Place:
Overjoyed with the new idea of owning a home in New Zealand and over zealous with the notion of decorating it; Mrs. Williams failed at giving consideration to any other details. She left what she termed “the build” to the architect, engineers, contractors, and designer. Soon after, she discovered that spending her time selecting furniture and fabric was a bit immature and that she should’ve collaborated with “the build” team more frequently. Mrs. Williams later learned that those golden rays in Blenheim, New Zealand, were far more than she’d bargained for. She only knew that this city was less sunny than the US. The house of her dreams happened to be built on New Zealand’s sunniest island with curtain wall windows shelling most of the 1st floor. Furniture and fabric became faded and damaged by the long sunny days. Mrs. Williams immediately researched the natural light of the land and made provisions to her home; while careful not to disengage the views of her natural surroundings.

Light and Nature:
It was virtually impossible not to long for a permanent view inside the home of the mountainous and lush region she’d relocated to. One where the outside could be experienced inside with all the shelter a roof provides. Since the house was built near the coast line the designer was intentional in encapsulating the breathtaking views of the water with the placement of the windows. Mrs. Williams is delighted with waking daily in a home where she could realize the power of natural light combined with the glistening effects from the movement of the water; which releases a unique dance on the interior walls, floors, and ceiling upon every opportunity.

Light and Climate
Mrs. Williams will be embarking on her 1st winter [June, July and August] soon and it is now time to consider the interaction between the inside and the outside. Since the average low is roughly 45° F, she is hoping for the greenhouse effect. Fully cognizant that the glass in the windows would admit the heat along with the sunlight and trap it; she took little action on extra padding for the winter months, as she was previously accustomed to doing so in Colorado. But what kind of psychological effects would the water have on a cold winter day? The visual effects of light in the winter can add a certain level of “brightness” to the day; however, Mrs. Williams is also faced with the psychological effects of the water being in close sight. It is a proven fact that water has a cooling effect on the body, which can be considered desirable in the summer months and perhaps less so during the winter. The motorized shades, installed during her initial provisions will have to be used at her discretion for moments of releasing the heat or capturing it; as well as the costal view!

Light and Time:
Embarking upon the winter has its special considerations as will be true for all the other seasons. Although New Zealand’s weather does not have a huge range it is common to change abruptly due to cold fronts and tropical cyclones. This creates challenges for outdoor activities while inside the home the use of natural light and electrical lighting becomes a necessary assessment. Or how much of each to use is considered and thought of more. Also, with the change of each season, shadows fall in different places during different times of the day, and colors take on new hues from sunrise to sunset. Since pollution is little to none UV rays in the sunlight is very strong and summers daylight savings can last up to 9 pm. So, how much of the natural light should Mrs. Williams utilize and how often should she mix it with electrical light? This will ultimately be at her discretion depending on several variables simultaneously like psychological effects and seasonal changes.

Light and Task:
Following a year and experiencing all seasonal climates, Mrs. Williams believes
that her electrical shades were more than a provision. They are her saving grace; as she is able to control the temperature and the atmosphere inside. The designer strategically placed the electrical lighting in areas that were more shaded from outside elements and buildings. Tasks are enjoyable around the home because the quality of the lighting is excellent. It’s never too much nor too little, and can be adjusted with ease if the UV rays are overpowering. Considering the long summer day, Mrs. Williams has taken interest in painting. After all she does have the perfect view and appropriate lighting to achieve that task.

In Conclusion:
Light matters with everything we do and achieve. Thanks to Christian Norberg-Schulz, Frank Lloyd Wright and others we are able to understand the connection to light in architecture as it relates to place, nature, climate, time, and task.

Wi10 (Reflection of semester)

Upon the start of each semester I usually enter my elected courses with a few personal goals in mind. Having received the syllabus, I read it and gained full comprehension of the learning objectives for each class. Then I began to establish a few goals of my own based on self-assessment. Naturally, the day I entered [IAR202-01] environmental design; I felt that there were several areas where improvements were imperative. Some of those areas were:

1. Being able to articulate ideas using design language in proper context
2. Institute a personal design process
3. Discovering my niche

Realizing that these improvements would further enhance my skill-set, I approached each opportunity with a certain level of attention to these items. I relied on the structure of the class to reveal much of these industry secrets to me and be an insightful resource. The assigned readings (Shaping Interior Space, Roberto Rengel) along with the book of our choosing (Architecture and the City, Aldo Rossi) satisfied a great amount of my 1st goal. I realized that the only path to gaining industry terminology and be well versed in any field of study is to submerge in reading. What’s noteworthy is that, I was not only assigned the reading, I was expected to divulge my findings in thought provoking essays and diagrams. Additionally, I was responsible for incorporating these new discoveries into project deliverables. Upon completion of each reading assignment this usually resulted into achieving my 2nd goal of instituting a personal design process. Rengel’s writings not only illustrated extraordinary design language, much of his subject matter integrated design process. Most of the assignments involved writing, diagramming, building a model and programming; which allowed, me to explore all of these in any order desired or simultaneously. I usually found that it was best for me to write about the experience of the space following, diagramming and building a 3D model. Once I experienced the space 3 dimensionally, envisioning the atmosphere and pathways / circulation was obvious, therefore, narrating became 2nd nature. I did realize however, that regardless of which order I start my process, they all are rough drafts and become edited from start to finish. I’ve learned as a designer that I must set deadlines on top of deadlines to move on to meet the clients’ deadline. The projects felt underdeveloped; there were often more improvements to be made following new discoveries. It became evident that each project required all of these elements at some point, but they could be achieved differently for each. Confirming my thoughts were guest speakers from Eames Furniture. Given the opportunity I asked, “How does one find their personalized design process”? They replied, “personal design process can be helpful but ultimately change is inevitable depending on the many variables of a project and the client”. As I start each assignment, my confidence increases in many areas, for instance, technical drawings, rendering and designing in a conceptual manner. Therefore, regarding my 3rd goal, I’ve sharpened many skills but my niche is still being decided.

I consider accomplishing these goals a reward of perusing higher education. I feel that I’ve gained invaluable lessons throughout this semester while completing the course work. Specifically, I’ve advanced from proficient in AutoCAD to a master due to producing a number of floor plans, elevations, and sections. I’ve also been introduced to Rhino, and have become proficient, following using it to bridge information to the laser cutter to build a number of models. Other lessons I’ve learned this semester can be attributed to my time spent in Materials, Methods, and Technologies, which made it a seamless transition when recording materials and finishes in schedules and specification documents. Having worked individually and with groups allotted for teammates to share best practices and strengths with me. Initially, I was intimated by rendering with Podium, until a couple of teammates who considered helping me, a pleasure. It was also through group work that I researched ADA issues, vertical and horizontal circulation, and egress requirements in interior spaces where structures became more complex.

There were many advantages to working in groups as there were disadvantages. As mentioned previously one advantage is that there are countless opportunities to explore other areas of design with a partner along side acting as a safety net. A disadvantage to this is with the time constraints and pressures of deadlines, responsibilities are generally delegated for efficiency. Thus, individuals are positioned in similar areas of design from one project to the next because of their proven ability to be most constructive and creative in particular areas. Working with each scale (3, 6, 12) inevitably there came different challenges and opportunities at each level. Opportunities for the group of 12:
1. cross training moments occurred more frequently
2. other members possessed higher degrees of proficiency
3. subgroups could coordinate times
Challenges for the group of 12:
1. coordinating times for all 12 members is difficult
2. some partners become complacent
My experience at each of these levels was that 1 factor remained a common thread; there must be complete order and organization to achieve success.

Reflecting upon the entire semester, I believe that I have enhanced my skill set in a number of areas. I’m looking forward to expanding upon them in the next semester of 3rd year.

Wi9 Unit to Whole (semester finale)

The combination of curves and angles is an unlikely recipe for most, but this exploration led to the formation of Symbiosis. We took the pronounced vertical curves and cleverly incorporated the equally pronounced angels; resulting into a six-story masterpiece. We are now commissioned to introduce yet another team of 6, Pinnacle, whom formed under the merger of six other concepts. We all assumed it’d be a difficult task to build a new structure encompassing each of our individual concepts. Once the location of Vic, Spain was selected we continued to develop our ideas concerning the natural environment and the intended functionality of the building. We found Synergy’s concept identity through this process, which then shaped our ideations on the facade of the building and it’s contents.

Our concept is based around reoccurring moments of openness (like nature) to enclosures (sheltered environments). Therefore, we decided that the new structure should be tucked away in the mountains and rolling hills, offering a sense of ultimate peace and relaxation; perhaps, from having left the busy city just 15 short miles away to further support the concept. Synergy’s structure takes the shape and formation of a spin top. It moves indefinitely in an upward position; due to our hexagonal shape created by stacking 12 two story units, which offset roughly 15% at every level change. It was with ease that I made a connection with this new structure as well as evident how to relate my concept. In this case, I am able to draw on the implied movement of both structures. My “S” shape and word ignite is about the motion and fluidity of flames. This new structure is certainly about movement, from the exterior facade to the interior where pathways and circulation has been designed due to the shell of the building.

Ironically enough, all partners of Synergy found their individuality, eventually. Revisiting Jenga 1.0, my concept word “Ignite”, and the kit of parts was realized through materials and finishes. The focal point inside my unit is a 28’ lightly frosted white corian “S” shape wall, that bursts through the ceiling of the 1^st level and expanded to the top of the 2^nd floor’s ceiling. I used soft blues for the wall colors and small hints of burnt red as accents throughout the interior. The selection of the dark hardwood floors in the living area was an attempt to give high contrast to the otherwise light walls. Tiled marble floors were used in the dining area and the bathroom, which added a texture distinction, which created a division of spaces, without enclosures like walls. Considering our location is Vic, Spain, I decided to create somewhat of a contrast from the 1^st floor to the 2^nd floor, and incorporate some of the historical vibrancy of colors. I used flaring red wallpaper with curves and organic shapes to offset the calmness and relaxed 1^st floor. Both floors were treated with small amounts of gray, to give a subtle yet sense of sophistication.

An additional opportunity has presented itself; another merger, creating two teams of twelve, totaling 12 units 24 stories. We scheduled a charette immediately. It's obvious right off that we must have 100% organization for this project to be a completed success.

I'd hope that we would be able to do more cross training; however, with the healthy list of deliverables, most of the team members are showing resistance to the thought. As it stands, our plan is to spread talent in the areas they're best suited. Upon completion of assigned responsibilities, it is then, that we encourage talents to meet for exposure in less familiar areas.

We're off to a great start.

Our group's name is: Synergy: (the interaction or cooperation of two or more organizations, substances, or other agents to produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects)

At the close of each “Jenga” I always experience a sense of relief along with a bit of regret. The relief is the end of the long nights and the 24 hour shifts; my regrets usually are not being able to give just a little more. My very first overnighter in 2nd year was on Jenga 1.0. There were a number of deliverables and I entered production mode oblivious! It’s not that the assignment wasn’t communicated and written well, it was simply that I developed tunnel vision long ago, ultimately closing my mind to other avenues of thinking and doing. A professor had warned me about this previously, he said, “Your symmetrical thinking is raping you of your creativity”. Building on each “Jenga” has given me peripheral vision. I approached Jenga 1.0 with a preconceived agenda. I wanted to design a space that was sensible and functional = BORING, as Claire would express it. I had not yet been commissioned to design in such an abstract manner. Which ultimately meant that I needed to deviate from the safe route to a journey of exploration and development. Jenga 2.0 was like an epiphany; conceptual thinking began to penetrate my brainwaves. I was very gracious to have another opportunity to implement this method of thinking I embarked upon. As always, I just needed a little more time to expound on the design.
Along with the challenge of conceptual thinking, also came the inevitable; the need to revise my design process, which alone had not completely matured. Jenga 3.0 would be the next OPPORTUNITY to hone in on both. Another dynamic was added to the equation of the assignment, two partners. Each partner possessed a unique set of design skills, talents, and method of thinking and doing. Merging the three personalities, considering all the concept words, incorporating all theoretical findings from readings and stacking the three buildings to form a cohesive design, this was a mission that seemed virtually impossible. Initially, we began with diagrams and narratives to help shape the building’s interior characteristics, spatial relationships, intersections, activities along path and navigation. This step in the design process was imperative to the very heart and soul of the space; it set the tone for the emotional experience of the guests. We were careful to remain cognizant of the previously mentioned strategy with the placement of each wall, corner, or edge positioned inside. Moving forward in the design process, we began to protrude those walls into a digital 3D model, while also fine tuning details of the public and private spaces. Things changes constantly as we began to transfer those 2D diagrams into 3D spaces. In addressing all these obstacles it became the perfect opportunity for each team member to show their best work. I certainly didn’t allow that moment to pass me by, after all, my discoveries on Jenga 1.0 was not made to be idle. We continued to make progress, allowing each member’s design voice to be evident wherever appropriate. Following completion of the assignment, we all felt that there were some communication issues, however, overall, we were delighted with the space we designed.
Patrick and Claire give second chances, proven fact with Jenga 4.0. Although, some of the deliverables were shaken up, the integrity of the teams from Jenga 3.0 remained. We all felt like we needed just a little more time needed to convey our design. We wanted also wanted to overcome some of our time management and communication obstacles. At the end of this assignment we believed that we successfully achieved our goals and that our obstacles were now to a minimum.
There’s no slowing down now, our teams once again remained intact, however; all teams bided on an additional team of three. We gathered for a charette for an hour with one team, then another. Other teams did the same and thus the decisions would be made. Those teams with the best CHEMISTRY or RHYTHM would merge. Patrick and Claire released the results of the bidding process, combing the best fits. Ultimately this collaboration / (collision) required that an additional three voices be heard and show up in the end product. Jenga 5.0 started much like Jenga 3.0, when the design process began to become more prevalent to me. However, this time around, there are new considerations to expound upon. We thought about what would fit into our spaces and how they would look. As part of the design process we began programming. Team members were positioned again according to skill-sets, but were encouraged to venture into other areas, to expand and grow. Once responsibilities were divided we aggressively began working the façade of our building and exploring materials, furniture, and fixtures. I was able to be cross-trained in rendering in podium, what an awesome adventure!
I feel like I’ve almost found my way! I’m sure Patrick and Claire will continue to guide me.

Some day I’ll find my design voice and position in this great big world!

Merging the two buildings were not an easy task. Neither was having six creative minds sorting out all the details. As our name suggests [ Symbiosis ], two very different beings living together, we finally hurled over all of the obstacles we faced and harmoniously united (Angeling) very distinct angles with equally pronounced curves (beaucoup de vegaus). What I went into with much hesitation has shaped up to be a structure I am proud of. I am especially ecstatic about seeing the influence I had on the project, actually appear in the final design.

Beaucoup de vagues and Angling merged to form a charrette. Immediately each group member shared information on its design concept, navigation of the spaces, and how to incorporate the books. We briefly discussed methods of synchronizing the spaces; which wasn’t as atrocious as I’d imagine, considering Angling’s complex exterior structure. The thought of a (new) group name circulated for a moment, then Justin made up the word “Curvangular”, we all concurred and moved on. Following, we swiftly established subgroups. These groups inadvertently formed; I was already taking notes regarding concepts and books, Phillip had pulled up and consolidated the models for each group, and Nikki had a pen and sketchbook in hand. Naturally, Angling’s group members migrated to the area that they were most comfortable. Justin and I wrote the concept statement, Nikki and Faith drew the diagrams, while Phillip and Anna worked on a perspective view from the sketch-up files. It was just perfecto!

Beaucoup de vagues and Circuit merged for a charrette following Angling. We attempted to follow the 1^st blueprint, since we accomplished each deliverable seamlessly. No so much! We found difficulty in every category, with the exception of stacking the buildings. Oddly enough, the building (Angling’s) that was most complicated to combine, we were able to achieve quality work and found delight in doing so. While, the building (Circuit’s) that was least complex, the work produced was less than desirable.

As the mixture of colors in the title suggests, we found that charrettes can be a brilliant method to solving design problems, due to the diversity / (mixture) of talent on a project.

All Saints Episcopal Church

Spaeh architecture + environments

Concept: Jill used the All Saints Episcopal Church shield for inspiration. Throughout the exterior and interior you'll find the simple yet sophisticated circle repeated in her design.

Upon entering the shield appears within a multicolor brick layout. She did inform us that she had to give a big hug to the masonry crew upon completion, as there were challenges of laying brick in this fashion.The courtyard is a new feature to the church; Jill incorporated benches to provide seating, making the courtyard multifunctional.

A nice little wind blows and a soft little jingle accompanies it. The parameters of the circular courtyard has rain chains throughout. It's a wonderful and thoughtful way to channel a little of what God gave us!

Once inside you feel serene, peaceful, and like you've found a little piece of heaven. This very clean and crisp interior has many hidden treasures as well as happy accidents. We also see Jill's concept appear in the uniquely designed ceiling and lighting fixtures. It also appears in the the hardwood floor where she used a contrasting finish to create a circular pattern. The curtains are from a local vendor and are fire retardant. Beyond the curtains is where Bible Study takes place, as well as storage. Hidden Treasures!

The floor is made from reclaimed wood. Jill was able to salvage wood from a retired minster's church; who's now a cabinet-maker and was contracted to work on the project. One day he made a mistake while building a piece of furniture designed by Jill...it ends up a happy accident, STAY tuned.

The class tuned in to hear more about materials and design.

Jill was able to salvage more than wood for the floors and furniture, she was able to keep the framing for the windows as well. REMEMBER: recycle, reuse, re purpose is the key to sustaining the earth for your children.

Ok, here's that piece furniture where the mistake was made, so where is it? Jill receives a phone call about a blemish/imperfection in the wood. Well, the problem was solved by contrasting the wood once again, this time with a horizontal ban, creating a beautiful motif that is repeated throughout the interior. This solid mahogany wood with vertical ribbed details is also reclaimed from the cabinet-maker's former church.

Below are diagrams of our three units merging. We have highlighted destinations, circulation, boundaries, and objects; creating public and private spaces.

Community is a basic need of humans. We need others to surround us in order to communicate and create friendships. Our space is all about bringing together designs as well as people.

As you enter into the large and lofty lobby you feel a sense of community from the various gathering areas. These areas can be used for eating with friends or sitting down for a chat with a neighbor. As you walk through to the back of the lobby it narrows into a hallway that leads to the three apartment spaces. If you continue straight back down the hall you will enter the stairwell that leads up to the large semi-outdoor rooftop terrace that is accessible from the second floors of the apartments. The space incorporates the main forms from the three different spaces and merges them into a cohesive design. These forms also produce the ceiling, space dividers, and seating. This area is a place to have the company of neighbors and friends while enjoying beautiful scenery, gardens, and quiet gathering areas.

Jenga 2.0 ended today with an immense amount of value and understanding for me. This assignment, a continuation from Jenga 1.0, extracted 1 of the 3 units for further exploration. Although there were many lessons in multitasking all 3 units simultaneously; the class appreciated the opportunity to focus on 1 unit. As a result I began to hone in on my personal design process, as well as, understand what "conceptual design" requires, not just what it means. It was obvious during critique that each student grew and that we all have room for growth. Overall, everyone challenged him/herself with the technology provided by the University. Those students' projects featured outside Patrick's office, displayed excellent technical skills, superior craftsmanship, and well-thought out board arrangement. It's a pleasure working along side and learning with such creative thinkers.

Presenter: Kelly Harris

Rising designer Kelly Harris introduced three design challenges via floor plans, ceiling plans, axonometric drawings, and a series of models. Here’s a review of his attempt at designing these three spaces, while introducing the word, “PENDULATE” conceptually.

Following Harris’s refreshing and informative presentation, my discoveries are as follows: Starting with the smallest space, the 11’x 32’4”; It is my belief that the model actually brought this space to life, giving a precise diagram of navigation . From the floor plan I gained a clearer perspective of clearances in this space, as Harris's interior walls swing about the the exterior walls. In my opinion she successfully communicated her design concept with her kit selection. Harris used two walls and a column to achieve her design challenge. Although, the column seems a bit isolated in the whole scheme, she gave us function in term "pendulate" with the walls.

Next, the 22’x 22’ space, Harris, uses 1 wall and 2 columns to express her design skills and ideations. She explains during the presentation that she intended to play on the geometry of the arch, deriving from her conceptual term "pendulate". She best communicated this idea visually with her model, which also, reveals her columns isolated and uncared for, yet again.

Finally, Harris continues the concept of pendulate in her third design, in a 22’ x 32’4” space. She uses two solids to demonstrate her design concept. Although, of the three spaces this design seems the least related to the concept term, she briefs it as a passage of time. The axonometric drawing supported her best in her communication efforts of this idea.

Presenter: Brian Peck

Rising designer Brian Peck introduced three design challenges via floor plans, ceiling plans, axonometric drawings, and a series of models. Here’s a review of his attempt at designing these three spaces, while introducing the word, “TWIST” conceptually.

Following Peck’s enthusiastic and eye-brow raising presentation, my discoveries are as follows: Starting with the smallest space, the 11’x 32’4”; I believe the model actually brought this space to life. I could visualize dwelling in the space, I also gained a clear perspective of the places intended for activity. His axonometric drawing was the most successful in communicating his conceptual thoughts around the word "twist". Although, a bit far fetched, twisting of the body, his kit of parts (two solids) displayed were clear in its intentions.

Next, the 22’x 22’ space, Peck, broke the mold with his innovativeness and skills while creating an interior with function and style. Taking 1 column, protruding it to the maximum height and two walls; in theory, this kit of parts allows one to twist around a centralized space. The designers axonometric drawing once again is the best aide in visualizing his conceptual design ideas.
Finally, Peck continues the concept of twisting in his third design, in a 22’ x 32’4” space. He uses two columns, and leaves us to interpret the third object as a wall, or not! Again, his kits of parts demonstrates his intention of incorporating the twist. In this theory, the objects themselves are twisted. I just hope you're not afraid of the dark...where the lighting inside those 14' tall walls? However, he does intertwine very cleverly the concept term and the objects in this space. My findings is that he, effectively and best communicate his design concept in the plan drawing.

Building 1: 32'4"x11' : kit C (2 columns, 1 wall)
IGNITE: burn, light, combustion, inflame, wake, arouse, evoke, raise, PROVOKE:

your passion daily and in every sense. You’ve been invited to step into a place that arouses a passion for nature. Upon entering you’re faced with 8’ tall-untreated windows, allowing all of nature in. Also, upon entrance you’re greeted with two columns that stand as tall as the trees. This layout is left open due to the small amount of square footage. The columns now serve a dual function; they represent the beauty and grandness like most things in nature while dividing spaces of activity. It’s clear where to reflect, sleep, and even prepare food. Since I’ve invited you in, let’s check out the remaining layout. Cruising through, pass the food prep area, a 10’Lx 10H wall is planted to provide yet again division of the space as well as a place for privacy in this case; it's the lavatory. The wall is made of wood and is uniquely carved with linear waves creating a motion like the rolling hills in the mountains. Departing will not be easy!

Arriving in this space will immediately send you in a comfort zone. It’s a place of relief as well as sheer chicness. The entrance welcomes you to unload the weight of the day! With a console table to left and plush setting to unwind, or to finish that conversation you tried ending previously, with the friend who can’t stop talking. Continuing, you’ll find a place to satisfy all your needs, including entertainment, eating, and bathing; All within a few steps of the other. What sets this interior aside from others is its old world charm with a modern heart beat. The furniture has been carefully chosen to arouse a sense of what’s new. Its distressed appearance suggests: from the flames of the fire rises the NEW. The fireplace rests in a linear direction along one of the two walls of the space. The designer utilized the wall to create a atmosphere of coziness one would feel while enjoying the burning of a fire. Functionally, was not spared in the design. The two walls along with the column successfully separate the places you visit inside the space as well as create privacy for intimate moments.

When the resident or his/her guests enter this space, it’s apparent that the experience will be rich! You are greeted with great art on the walls and a massive bookshelf. Within this space seating is arranged for reflection. Immediately you may indulge yourself in a moment to read, relax, relate or release. Just continue inside straight ahead near the windows or on the north wall; or perhaps take a slight left where additional seating is also an option. Having ample seating allows guests to feel burden free and cozy. Once the reflection period is over and you’re interested in an engaging in other activities, such as a favorite television program, there’s only a few short flight of stairs to the entertainment and eating area. It’s very convenient and cleverly positioned for the ultimate socializing experience. The inevitable has happened, a side trip to the restroom. Since this space only has two solid areas and is opened otherwise, there’s no chance of getting lost. Exiting the activity area, a left turn will take you to the restroom, where guests get an additional moment to admire the artwork. Departure will also be an easy task; you’ve passed it on the route to the restroom, and it’s the only door in the living space. The areas (places) inside the space were strategically situated for the resident and his/her guest in mind. Conceptually, each space where activity will take place was raised from the main floor level with short flights of stairs...evoking or heightening the urgency to engage them.

I am a graduate of High Point University, where I earned a bachelor’s degree in Home Furniture Marketing. Once I received my bachelors I decided that my education at HPU wasn’t enough. During the interim of searching for a continuing education institution, I acquired a job with a small firm that specializes in interior renovations of multi-family housing units. My title: “Marketing Director”, however, I wore many hats. My favorite was selecting the hardware, plumbing fixtures, counter tops and lighting for the units. I also worked for a furniture company where I became familiar with over 300 manufactures of residential and commercial furniture and accent pieces. In this position I worked close at hand with the owner of the store, designing the showroom. Overall, I enjoyed assisting customer in their furniture selection and space planning. It was then that I discovered that I wanted to do more than select furniture and fabric; I wanted to decide the shape and form of living spaces and decide the functionality of them.

At this point, it became apparent that UNCG was the perfect fit.

As an adult student I brought many strengths and weakness along with me. I believe that one of my major attributes, as a designer is my ability to be versatile. I am able to successfully complete a project from the client / professor’s specifications; without over implementing my own personal style preference. My classmates concurred as well as pointed out my professionalism.

Never the less I have much more room for growth. I am eager to be able to effectively communicate my ideas and designs using correct design terms. I am also anxious to find my niche in design.

In addition......

Following class on Friday, January 14, 2011 as well as a day and a half of fumbling with an assignment that included building a model, space planning, and writing a narrative. I’ve now reprioritized my goals. I need to establish my very own DESIGN PROCESS!

We have been given an opportunity by Cindy Pennix to develop and design a cancer retreat center for recovering cancer patients. Initially, we took a journey to the property for documentation purposes. We explored 10 acres of beautiful land including a lake and grape vines. The class was broken into groups to report in a digital format their discoveries of the land. My group was responsible for surveying the site. The next images below illustrates the topography and the other facts about the contours of the land!
