Facing The Challenge

There are several design schools entering the competition; however, the interior spaces have been divided among each competing school.  UNCG will design the entry, up and downstairs hallways, as well as the bedrooms.

Our studio divided into 4 teams : My Team : Katherine McCain, Ebony Goode, and myself.  These are additional photos of Woodlawn, some are for inspiration as we begin to develop our concept and others are of the rooms where we will face the challenge of redesigning and revitalizing.

Team Members Bio's

Ebony Goode is earning her BFA in Interior Architecture at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Her interests include furniture design, graphic design and space planning. She has excelled at furniture design and construction. Her attention to detail is excellent and shows in her designs, floor plans and graphic layouts.

Cassandra Brunson earned her Bachelor of Science in Home Furnishings Marketing at High Point University [HP, North Carolina] in 2004, and is currently a senior at UNC Greensboro completing her BFA in Interior Architecture.  She has attended the High Point Furniture Market as a buyer for over a decade...collecting a wealth of experience and knowledge in the home furnishings and accessory industry.  With her education, work experience, and keen eye for details, she applies the elements and principles of interior design to any space with purpose, intention and passion.

Katherine McCain is a senior at UNC Greensboro and is completing her BFA in Interior Architecture.  She has worked for over eight years as support staff for private firms dealing with commercial civil engineering, land planning and landscape architecture.  Learning the design principles and applying them to interior design has helped her see the similarities between interior space planning and the projects her current job works on. She hopes to transition from support staff to a full-time designer once she graduates.

Team CEK Since our team has worked together in the past, we knew each other’s strengths and realize how to capitalize on that familiarity to make this project run smoothly.  Knowing the history of our group and designing for a historical site, relates directly to the essence of this project and our design sensibility.  As a team, the three of us communicate our ideas well. We have similar work ethics and design style.  We each take the time to consider each perspective and are able to seamlessly come up with a design solution.  Collectively we offer a very diverse skill-set and range of interests that allows us to deliver safe, functional, and aesthetically pleasing living spaces.

Concept Development

Our Vision is Woodlawn’s History!

Our thoughts of Woodlawn and the judge's committee!

We want to thank you for this opportunity to participate in the Made In America competition.  Learning about the rich history of Woodlawn Plantation and being exposed to the beautiful furniture and accessories that are made in America has enriched our design experience.  Learning about the diverse history of Woodlawn impacted our design because of the unique people that have lived there and the unique activities that have taken place there.  Each space we have designed incorporates themes from the past.  We think about the new family that will live here and what type of people they are. We think they will be an established political couple who entertains and wants to expose their friends and colleagues to the special people and things that make Woodlawn one of our National Treasures.
The historical Woodlawn Community is made up of a diverse group of people who were forward thinkers. We wanted to stay true to it's origins . We chose light and delicate pieces throughout that celebrate the Federal Style. We pulled from the wrought iron window work as inspiration for the motifs on some of the pieces. The enhance the natural lighting we chose a calm and natural color pallet of blues and yellows to reflect light and to allow the spaces to be light filled.
Woodlawn is unique in many ways but one of the most noteworthy historical values of the estate is its initiative to provide an education to a diverse group of individuals including the less privileged as well as blacks from the free labor colony.  Therefore we've transformed/updated the linen room into a reading room to pay homage to this historical fact.  The rooms in this house were created to evoke life long experiences, by gazing the stars, reading, playing instruments, and other activities such as these that provided enrichment and education.  The large, arched shaped window in the reading room frames a perfect view of the estate and its lush green lands with a snippet of Mt. Vernon in the backdrop.  The reading room is outfitted with an inviting palette of earthy colors, book shelves, a uniquely shaped reading chair to provide a comfortable position for hours of reading and of course a telescope that assists in gazing the stars or a cardinal in passing.  This restoration provides a glimpse of the past, however, with selections from all our sponsors, restores the grander.

latest iterations

This version has a lighter back end tail... I thought it would be nice to see what it could look like without the heavy center mass of the seat, back, and tail.
