Our thoughts of Woodlawn and the judge's committee!
We want to thank you for this
opportunity to participate in the Made In America competition. Learning
about the rich history of Woodlawn Plantation and being exposed to the
beautiful furniture and accessories that are made in America has enriched our
design experience. Learning about the diverse history of Woodlawn
impacted our design because of the unique people that have lived there and the
unique activities that have taken place there. Each space we have
designed incorporates themes from the past. We think about the new family
that will live here and what type of people they are. We think they will be an
established political couple who entertains and wants to expose their friends
and colleagues to the special people and things that make Woodlawn one of our
National Treasures.
The historical Woodlawn Community is made up
of a diverse group of people who were forward thinkers. We wanted to stay true
to it's origins . We chose light and delicate pieces throughout that celebrate
the Federal Style. We pulled from the wrought iron window work as inspiration
for the motifs on some of the pieces. The enhance the natural lighting we chose
a calm and natural color pallet of blues and yellows to reflect light and to
allow the spaces to be light filled.
Woodlawn is unique in many ways but one
of the most noteworthy historical values of the estate is its initiative to
provide an education to a diverse group of individuals including the less
privileged as well as blacks from the free labor colony. Therefore we've
transformed/updated the linen room into a reading room to pay homage to this
historical fact. The rooms in this house were created to evoke life long
experiences, by gazing the stars, reading, playing instruments, and other
activities such as these that provided enrichment and education. The
large, arched shaped window in the reading room frames a perfect view of the
estate and its lush green lands with a snippet of Mt. Vernon in the
backdrop. The reading room is outfitted with an inviting palette of
earthy colors, book shelves, a uniquely shaped reading chair to provide a
comfortable position for hours of reading and of course a telescope that
assists in gazing the stars or a cardinal in passing. This restoration
provides a glimpse of the past, however, with selections from all our sponsors,
restores the grander.
